Understanding Acne Myths

By Lyman Roediger

1. Acne may be caused by poor hygiene

Even though oil, dirt, plus germs may block up pores and make acne worse, it is not the primary root factor for acne. Acne has several causes, the most primary being hormonal factors and to some degree, genes. For anyone predisposed to acne, poor hygiene might make acne worse, yet will not be the only cause of acne for most people.

2. Acne is going to last for many years

Even if those people having acne are most probably going to have their acne for a long time, a lot of people who have acne during their childhood and teenage years improve when they reach mid-late twenties with no regimen. The reason for this is because of the stabilization in hormone levels when one reaches the mid-late twenties.

3. Sexual activity worsens acne breakouts

Although there is no proof of how sexual activity affects acne, there is this belief that acne could be worsened by the testosterone levels and hormonal mileu linked to increased sexual acts.

4. Acne may be infectious

Acne is never contagious. In case you touch or rub against anyone having acne, you are not going to attain acne from their lesions. Rather, touching or rubbing, can result in pore blockage as well as cause acne - an example being those people who breakout on their cheeks and chin from speaking on the telephone for lengthened periods of time.

5. Feeding on fatty foods leads to acne

Consuming certain food is not the cause of acne. Minimal studies have been implemented to prove whether or not foods trigger acne, and while a few studies might have suggested a connection, there is no evidence to back up that acne is linked to what you eat.

6. Acne could be treated by sun exposure

There is no evidence that tanning or sunlight exposure enhances acne. There are some people who subjectively look more beautiful after sun exposure, yet there has been no proof saying that acne may get better after regular exposure to the sun. It is very well-known that sun exposure results in several types of skin cancers and strongly leads to accelerated skin aging.

7. The more you wash your skin, the more better your acne will be

Facial washing is going to make acne better but the effect is not that big. To make acne better, for those individuals who have really mild acne can wash 2-3 times daily. On the contrary, for those people in which simple washing does not really get rid of acne, further washing is not going to help and is also not advised.

8. Popping pimples is the best move to make when you see active acne

Popping pimples is thought to eliminate the pain and inflammation it causes yet, this is not really advisable since this may greatly worsen the acne instead.
